Colel Chabad currently maintains seventeen spotless soup kitchens in Israel and two in the former Soviet Union; providing over 3,000 hot, nourishing meals daily. They maintain two elegant wedding halls for poor young couples, children of indigent widows for who the financial challenge of getting married is insurmountable. They distribute over $1 million in vouchers before the Jewish holidays to enable poor families to shop for necessities at regular stores in dignity. In the former Soviet Union, Colel Chabad provides senior clubs, hot lunches, educational programs and social gatherings to ease the loneliness and discomfort of the elderly in addition to programs for children and teens i.e. social clubs, summer camps, celebrations, leadership programs, a network of Jewish schools, and leadership programs.

To end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island.  Island Harvest was created in 1992 by one woman with a cooler, a station wagon, and a strong desire to help people in need. Linda Breitstone, their founder, was infuriated that food from a local convenience store was being thrown away at the end of the day – with a soup kitchen down the street. In response, she established Island Harvest and their mission, “to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island.”

Their staff and volunteers collect surplus food - perfectly good food that would otherwise go to waste - from hundreds of supermarkets, delis, caterers, hotels, wholesalers, and distributors. Then, they deliver it, free of charge, to a network of 570 soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and other places where those who need it can get it, all across Long Island. Since their inception in 1992, Island Harvest has delivered 55 million pounds of food, supplementing more than 42 million meals. In support of their mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island, they are actively involved in educational and hunger awareness programs to inform the public about the insidious but often unrecognized problem of hunger here, in one of the wealthiest regions of the country, and how individuals, businesses, and schools can make a difference.

To the timid soul, nothing is possible.
