Quality isn't something that can be argued into an article or promised into it. It must be put there. If it isn't put there, the finest sales talk in the world won't act as a substitute.

The Food Bank’s mission is to work in partnership with the community to feed the hungry, increase awareness of the effects of hunger and lead programs designed to alleviate hunger.

Support for their programs comes from a variety of sources. Gifts from Individuals, Grants from Foundations, Workplace Giving Campaigns, and Corporate Sponsorship and Cause-Related Marketing are all sources from which they receive generous financial support. These funds used to carry out their mission of feeding hungry people in America.Program:Food 4 Kids Backpack ProgramBudget: $120,000Category: Food, Agriculture & NutritionPopulation Served: Children Only (5 - 14 years) Program Description: An initiative of the Food Bank of Northern Indiana, Backpack 4 Kids is an emergency food assistance program designed for students in grades K-6.  Student participants receive food for the weekend and during holiday breaks when they do not have access to free and reduced school lunches.  Backpack 4 Kids is free for eligible students and their families.  The Backpack for Kids Program was developed at the Arkansas Rice Depot in Little Rock, after a school nurse asked for help because students were coming to her with stomach aches and dizziness. The local food bank began to provide the school children with food in non-descript backpacks to carry home.  The National Council of Feeding America (the Food Bank of Northern Indiana’s parent organization) approved the Backpack Program as an official national program of the Feeding America Network in July 2006.  The Food Bank of Northern Indiana began its Backpack 4 Kids Program in 2006.  The program has added ftheir new schools for the 2011-2012 school year for a total of 16 participating schools in northern Indiana.  Participating schools are: Battell, Emmons, Harrison, Lincoln, Madison, Muessel, Perley and Coquillard (new in 2011) Primary Centers in St. Joseph County; Hawthorne, Mary Beck, Monger and Beardsley Elementary Schools in Elkhart County; Knox Elementary in Starke County;  New Prairie (new in 2011), Prairie View (new in 2011), and Rolling Prairie (new in 2011) Elementary Schools in LaPorte County.  Selected schools are identified as having a high rate of children eligible for free lunch programs.  Food is delivered to the participating schools each Thursday.  Students receive 12-15 items in a backpack each Friday at school.  The items are nutritious, kid-friendly, shelf-stable and ready to eat with little or no cooking (some items may need to be heated in a microwave).  Students are responsible for returning the backpack to school each Monday for the next week.  Using backpacks helps shield the student from any stigma that may be associated with being hungry or receiving food assistance.
