The City Rescue Mission has a rich Christian history, having been formed as a result of a spiritual awakening in New Castle (PA) after the famed evangelist, Dr. Billy Sunday, held a citywide crusade. In November 1911, the City Rescue Mission opened its doors to minister to the least, the last and the lost. Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley’s mission is to solicit, store and distribute food to hunger relief organizations feeding hungry people in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties; and to provide education and advocacy.

SHFOTMV addresses hunger in adults and children in the tri-county area it serves. SHFOTMV obtains prepared leftover food from local restaurants and distributes it to those in need. SHFOTMV also offers an urban gardening program supporting 30 community and 200 backyard gardens ($22,000). Among SHFOTMVs recent accomplishments were receiving a grant to purchase a computer system to update its office, and hiring two additional staff members. The organization was invited to participate in the postal workers food drive, and received 12 tons of food.
