Services:
Caracole’s mission is to provide safe, affordable housing and supportive services for individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS. Founded in 1987, Caracole Inc. was the first housing agency in the tri-state for people living with HIV/AIDS. When Caracole first opened its doors, the client population consisted of relatively young gay and bisexual men diagnosed with AIDS.  At that time, the average lifespan was two years from diagnosis to death. In 1998 with the advent of many new and potentially life-saving drug regimens, those living with HIV/AIDS began living longer, healthier lives dramatically changing their needs and therefore the services they provide. Since that time their staff has seen substantial increases in the number of women, homeless people, and families in need of extensive assessment, treatment, and referral services for mental health, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS care and housing. In response to those factors, Caracole now provides case management and housing along a continuum of care which includes six comprehensive programs:  Caracole House, Caracole Recovery Community, Shelter Plus Care, Permanent Supportive Housing, Short-Term Rental and Mortgage Assistance and Medical Case Management.

Caracole’s three comprehensive housing programs are: Caracole House has been offering affordable transitional housing and case management services for homeless low-income single adults living with HIV/AIDS since 1988. In addition to providing case management and referral services, Caracole House offers a progressively structured environment to support their residents as they work toward self-sufficiency. Caracole Recovery Community opened its doors in 2000. It offers transitional housing and a supportive, structured environment for homeless low-income, chemically dependent single adults living with HIV/AIDS. In addition to providing case management and referral services, the Recovery Community offers a progressively structured, drug and alcohol-free environment to support their residents as they work toward self-sufficiency. The program’s focus is to assist clients with re-learning their strengths in order to be able to live without drugs or alcohol. Prior to entry, clients need be clean and sober for at least 30 days. Shelter Plus Care Shelter Plus Care, which serves the largest number of clients (over 150 clients, caregivers and children), is a rent subsidy program offering a permanent housing solution for homeless individuals and families with an adult member living with HIV/AIDS. Caracole provides case management and supportive services to help these individuals and families find and maintain safe housing, stay together and live as independently as possible. Shelter Plus Care is partially funded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development and the State of Ohio.
