STORYBOOK PROJECT supports children with incarcerated parents by enhancing the relationship between the child and their parent due to the difficult period of separation Community volunteers help organize monthly reading sessions at the Iowa Correctional Institute for Women in Mitchellville, the Newton Correctional Facility and the Iowa Correctional Release Center in Newton Volunteers assist incarcerated parents and grandparents with selecting and reading a book to their child via recording, and sending the book and recording home to their child The program also offers a parenting class for mothers at the ICIW in Mitchellville 515-288-1516.

POLK COUNTY HEALTHY START AND EMPOWERMENT PROJECTS offer voluntary case management services to families that would like extra support to ensure a healthy mom, healthy child and healthy family Services include home visits; prenatal, postpartum and parenting education; child development screening and education; support and therapy groups; links to other resources; parent involvement opportunities; transportation to and from healthcare and other appointments; and interpretation services. SENIOR COMPANION PROGRAM offers companionship and assistance with daily living needs to homebound adults through the Senior Companion Program. FOSTER GRANDPARENT PROGRAM provides one-on-one assistance to high risk children with special and exceptional needs who attend elementary and preschools in Polk County Foster Grandparents are low-income elderly volunteers who receive an hourly stipend and reimbursement for volunteer related expenses such as transportation and meals with students as part of their volunteer work Foster Grandparents are matched with children who are from low-income households; perform academically below grade level; have mental or physical disabilities; and/or are diagnosed with a behavior disorder In schools, Foster Grandparents are matched with identified students to provide one-on-one support including reading assistance; clarifying and translating group instructions; and helping a child stay focused and on-task In child care and preschool settings, Foster Grandparents act as a calming influence for children and assist in the development of motor and learning skills and self-help skills. 515-558-9975.
