Clients must demonstrate the ability to maintain or a plan for sustainability as part of their responsibility for the assistance provided. As part of their plan for personal responsibility, an increasing number of clients are assigned a referral agreement to engage them in specific counseling or training resources in the community, that will equip them to avoid recurring crisis.

Services: United Way Agency - Christians United Outreach Center serves the working poor and indigent population of Randolph County through a variety of programs. The primary program of CUOC is short-term financial crisis intervention This program includes, but is not limited to, providing food, clothing, household items, furniture, gas vouchers so people can get to work or minor car repairs, RX assistance, heat, utilities, rent, mortgage payments, and medical equipment. Another program is a homeless initative called Project Independence (PI). PI is a long-term transitional housing solution with supportive services designed to assist a person(s) for a period of up to two years. To be eligible, the participant must meet the HUD definition of homeless and should be desire driven to become self-sufficient in 24 months, be willing to work with a program manager and volunteer mentor to develop a plan of action to reach such goals and be willing to

Services: Financial assistance is only provided to recently laid off people from work or qualifies for FEMA funds. These clients must provide a written letter on company letterhead from employer stating layoff status, Unemployment paperwork from ESC, valid NC picture ID, household SS cards, and all the monthly houshold bills. Financial assistance is given for electric, heat, gas, oil, water, and rent.
