Services: WEST DES MOINES HUMAN SERVICES CENTER provides information, outreach and referral services. Services include:
HOMELESS PREVENTION - partial rent or mortgage payment, partial rent deposit, or partial temporary housing assistance and partial emergency utilities assistance. West Des Moines only.
SHOWER is available to assist homeless individuals Call 222-3660 for hours and availability.
TRANSITIONAL HOUSING PROGRAM for eligible homeless families - must call to check for availability.
TRANSPORTATION for elderly or persons with disabilities. Must be WDM resident. Contact Carmen Murille, 222-3661.
HANDYMAN SERVICE available to seniors and disabled (see separate listing) 515-222-3661.
LIHEAP energy assistance or heating bill assistance is available for one month during the winter months, November- April (serves all Western Suburbs).
GAS/ELECTRIC emergency utility assistance to families experiencing financial hardship (West Des Moines only).
H20 PLUS program assists with West Des Moines water or municipal services bill.
EICP (Energy Crisis Intervention Payments program) offers furnace repair/replacement assistance
WEATHERIZATION program offers plastic for windows, strips of wood and nails to put plastic in place - qualifying household.
AIR CONDITIONERS and FANS.
FOOD PANTRY serves the Western suburbs of Polk County (except Urbandale & Windsor Heights, which can go to Urbandale food pantry) Bring photo ID, currently utility bill, proof of income, SS cards for household members.
SHARE is a private, not-for-profit organization that provides up to 50% savings on food packages once a month. The standared food package varies monthly, and always contains packages fresh fruit, vegetables and meat. GARDEN PROGRAM apply in April for limited value garden voucher.
PERSONAL PANTRY includes soap, shampoo, feminine care products, toilet tissue, deodorant, diapers, and toothpaste (based on donations/availability). Bring photo ID, currently utility bill, proof of income, SS cards for household members.
CLOTHING CLOSET offers clothing and household items for low income clients; Mon, Tue and Thu 8 am-3 pm, Wed and Fri 8 am-12 noon.
HOLIDAY ASSISTANCE available during the Thanksgiving and Christmas season (food baskets, toys and meals served at community center).
OTT-MTA Bus Pass Program.
RECREATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS for low-income children: camps, music/dance lessons, sport activities; children's free summer lunch program; holiday assistance and programs; as well as other human service related programs.
SCHOOL SUPPLIES for low-income children in the West Des Moines School District. Call afer June 15th to schedule an appointment.
