The Louisiana War Veterans' Home is a State licensed health facility managed by the Louisiana Department of Veterans' Affairs. The Jackson facility provides 161 nursing care beds.

Eligibility: The veteran: must be a resident of the State of Louisiana ; must have served on active military duty 90 days or more during a wartime period as defined by the United States Department of Veterans' Affairs, or had 90 consecutive days or more of service that either began or ended during a wartime period. If active military service was of less than 90 days, the veteran must have been discharged as a result of a disability incurred in the line of duty and must have received a discharge under honorable conditions for his or her most recent period of active military service; must undergo a medical examination prior to admission; must agree to pay the full resident care and maintenance fee; income; not have criminal charges pending.
All U.S. Military Veterans serving 90 days or more with honorable discharges, spouses of those veterans, and Gold Star Patients.

Services: The New Life Center, located in Opelousas provides emergency shelter, transitional housing and supportive services for up to 37 homeless women and 31 children per night All residents participate in case management where they are assisted with applying for mainstream benefits, entering school, obtaining employment and permanent housing Residents also attend life skills sessions, job counseling and are referred to outside agencies for additional counseling A chemical dependency program is also available for those women recovering from alcohol and/or drug addictions All residents are provided with three meals a day, transportation, prescription assistance, clothing, diapers and toiletries.

Eligibility: Homeless women, with or without children; substance abusers must be drug/alcohol free for 72 hours before entering. Will accept mothers with sons to age 18.
