Services: To end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island. Island Harvest was created in 1992 by one woman with a cooler, a station wagon, and a strong desire to help people in need. Linda Breitstone, their founder, was infuriated that food from a local convenience store was being thrown away at the end of the day – with a soup kitchen down the street. In response, she established Island Harvest and their mission, “to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island.” Their staff and volunteers collect surplus food - perfectly good food that would otherwise go to waste - from hundreds of supermarkets, delis, caterers, hotels, wholesalers, and distributors. Then, they deliver it, free of charge, to a network of 570 soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and other places where those who need it can get it, all across Long Island.
Since their inception in 1992, Island Harvest has delivered 55 million pounds of food, supplementing more than 42 million meals.
In support of their mission to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island, they are actively involved in educational and hunger awareness programs to inform the public about the insidious but often unrecognized problem of hunger here, in one of the wealthiest regions of the country, and how individuals, businesses, and schools can make a difference.
