Services: Contrary to its reputation for affluence, Santa Barbara County is home to many families and individuals who are living in poverty and struggle to meet their basic needs. More than 17% of the residents of Santa Barbara County live below the federal poverty level (Santa Barbara County Public Health Dept, 2005). Santa Barbara County has one of the highest rates of food insecurity among all counties in California: more than one in three low-income households is food insecure (UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, June 2007). People who are food insecure often do not know where their next meal is coming from. Founded in 1982, the mission of the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County is to distribute nutritious food to those in need and to provide education to solve hunger and nutrition problems in their county. Their basic warehouse distribution is their major program. The Foodbank is the catalyst that brings together community resources, food donors, community nonprofits, and volunteers to feed hungry people. To bring food in, they collaborate with national and local growers, producers, and food manufacturers that donate nutritious surplus food that would otherwise be wasted. To deliver food where it is most needed, they partner with a network of over 200 food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters that serve low-income people. The scope of their activities is unique: they serve the entire population of Santa Barbara County from two warehouses in Santa Barbara and Santa Maria. They are the only local organization with the capacity to accept, store and distribute millions of pounds of food annually. Their membership in Americas Second Harvest, the nations leading domestic anti-hunger organization, gives us access to sources of food regionally and nationally that are not available to other hunger-relief agencies. The Foodbank also operates specialized programs that target children and the elderly who are at high risk of hunger and malnutrition: the BackPack Program, which distributes backpacks filled with food for the weekend to 300 children who are homeless or living in transient housing; Children at Risk, which provides healthy food to almost 6,000 children in programs such as Head Start; and the Brown Bag Program for Seniors, which provides two bags of groceries each month, including fresh fruit and vegetables, to low-income people over the age of 60. To deliver food directly to areas where it is most needed, they are expanding their Mobile Food Pantry and Mobile Farmers Market Programs, which bring food directly to people in low-income neighborhoods.
