Services: The Williamsburg AIDS Network was founded in 1990 as a grassroots, volunteer organization to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and to provide services to those infected with HIV in the Greater Williamsburg area. The organization was incorporated and received its 501(C)3 nonprofit status in 1994. Services were provided solely by volunteers until 1996 when the first client services coordinator was hired with funds from Ryan White Title II. WAN now offers an array of testing and counseling, education, and client services programs. They remain commited to developing awareness, focusiprevention and HIV counseling and testing programs. ng resources, and educating the community on HIV/AIDS, and offering services to those living with HIV/AIDS. There is no charge to clientelle for any programs or services. The Williamsburg AIDS Network provides case management services to individuals infected with HIV/AIDS. Services include medical care coordination, assistance in accessing medications, dental care, transportation, and housing, advocacy and assistance in applying for disability, food stamps, Medicaid, etc. Medicaid AIDS Waiver case management is provided and they also offer housing assistance under Housing Opportunities for Persons With AIDS. In 2006, 26 individuals received client services.
The HIV prevention education program offers programs on HIV/AIDS 101, prevention skills building, developing healthy relationships, parent-child communication, and sexually transmitted infections. Programs are age appropriate and tailored to meet the needs of the group. WAN regularly offers single-session and multiple-session HIV prevention programs designated by the Centers for Disease Control as Effective Interventions. WAN provides education programs in the local schools, at Colonial Services Board, Avalon Shelter for Domestic Violence, the Merrimac Juvenile Detention Facility, the Salvation Army Transitional Shelter, Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail, and at local health fairs. Over 1,000 individuals participate in their education programs each year.
WAN provides free, anonymous HIV counseling and testing at the WAN office and at various community sites. WAN uses Home Access HIV test kits for testing purposes. Individuals receive their test results from Home Access within seven - 10 days of testing. People seeking HIV testing are asked to call the WAN office to schedule an appointment. Over 120 people receive HIV counseling and testing through WAN on an annual basis.
